Divine Moments

Life is a journey with many passing stages. Each step of our way is filled with its own unique challenges, but also blessings. Can you think of a few?

  • The time of sweetness when we hold a baby for the fist time and let them curl their little fingers around ours.
  • The days of pure joy when we lose ourselves in play knowing we are safe in our parents care.
  • We remember that first glimpse of our life’s partner–the spark that flares between two in just a moment of fate’s recognition.

Hopefully when life becomes challenging we can lean into these memories and embrace them as divine moments…gifts from God.

Caspar David Friedrich:
The Life Stages, Casper David Friedrich 1774-1840, oil on canvas, 28.5 x 37 inches               Image Source

German Romantic landscape artist Casper David Friedrich captures all of life’s stage on one canvas and eloquently shares with us his vision of the children at play; the young dandy; the elder statesman. Each are then corresponding in some way to the ships that are sailing either towards or away from the shore. Lovely to think and meditate on his intent and I really think there are multiply ways to view this scene.

Other interesting things to note about this artist is that he was Lutheran and believed that nature was a revelation of God. So I went on my own journey to see the magnificence of God this week. This was the view on my street on evening.

I hope you will find your own revelations this week as you journey towards your individual shores:)

How lovely is your dwelling place, O Lord Almighty!

My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord;

My heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.

Even the sparrow has found a home,

and the swallow a nest for herself,

where she may have her young-

a place near your alter,

O Lord Almighty, my King and my God,

Blessed are those who dwell in your house;

they are ever praising you. ~ Psalm 84: 1-4
