Praising God: Stillness

There is something about this painting I find very appealing…

Maybe it represents something to my subconscious mind. I feel like I could look at it for ages and never grow tired. I believe my mother had a reproduction of this painting hanging on the wall of our house in California, so it could represent a simpler time for me.

I like to imagine the artist, carefully placing each item on a table in his studio and examining their shape and color very slowly. To do this he would have been very detail oriented and very still. Maybe I like thinking about his process because I can relate it to how I learn a new piece of music…taking apart each phrase and finding the shape and flow of each line of music. To really learn something well enough to perform it in front of people and play from your heart, you must practice things very slowly and look for all the detail. You must practice stillness.

Look closely…

The fluffy white linen table cloth with its deep gray folds and peachy pink contrasting areas that help you understand the direction of the sun shining in upon the table.

Everything is carefully arranged to portray the rich fleshy tones of the fruit. The painting is enticing us to feelings of abundance.

He then jazzes up this simple scene by placing them near a floral picture and a billowing backdrop of a heavy floral curtain. This floral theme echoes in my mind and reminds me of the Garden of Eden. I begin to think about Adam and Eve and how we were originally created to live simply in the presence of God.

“Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. And the Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground–trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food.” ~ Genesis 2: 8-9a

A little view of the back garden cafe at the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena California. I loved this museum when we visited in May. If you are planning a trip to Los Angeles I highly recommend!!

May God’s Peace be with you this week and always.

      1. I don’t know why I don’t get your post on a regular basis? I always enjoy visiting with you. You’re reading my mind-about staying in the slow lane, especially with writing–I’m addicted, but I want to read many more books and enjoy summer more in nature, thanks for the encouragement.

      2. I’m afraid I only post once a week and sometimes if I get busy I might miss a week or two. I struggle with not being able to sit at the computer for too long so sometimes other things take its place. I will stop by your blog soon! I have already read 6 books this summer. So excited about each and every one! Last summer I could not find a book to save my life. I think I am in a much better place. Take care and keep doing your thing;)
