In every class I teach, at some point, I will play Bach’s prelude for cello. It is one of my favorite pieces of music and I have found that it is a good way to introduce Bach to young listeners. I believe it is because this music really speaks to the heart of who Bach was and how he lived and it resonates with all of us when we really chose to sit down and listen.
I was pleased to see that Yo-Yo Ma picked this to make a statement of unity and how art can bring us together.
So I ask you: What do you see when you watch this video? What impresses you and where is your mind going the most during this performance?
Everyone will have different answers but at the end of it, I always encourage my students to listen again. Only this time close your eyes and ask yourself what is Bach telling us with this music? What kind of feeling does he end the piece?
I look forward to reading your answers.
Peace be with you!
